Herding Cattle: What Not To Do

Posted on

This is post was one of the first on the blog, but since it’s one of my favorite accounts of Joey (and since I’m pretty sure only my mom and Mr. B ever read it), I’m re-posting it today for a link up with Jackie and Karly.

Jade and Oak

Back in the early days of spring, we took Joey to meet the cows for the first time. He’d been up to the cow pasture once before, but that time he decided to wait by the truck rather than follow Mr. B into the herd. This time, Mr. B and I coaxed him into the pasture with us. He wasn’t exactly stoked about it, but he did join us.

The cows were curious about Joey,

but he was not equally intrigued by them.

What the...?!?!

What the…?!?!

Please get away from me. Please?

He tried hiding behind me

and behind Mr. B.

He also tried seeking refuge between my feet

and in Mr. B’s arms.

When none of this worked, he ran from them. It backfired – they chased him. Which is the opposite of what is supposed to happen when a dog herds cattle.

Hopefully, with a little bit of practice, he’ll figure out that he is supposed to be chasing them. Fingers crossed.

    Joey is so cute!

This makes me laugh, because my Monroeville friend calls Armstrong County “Nebraska.” Yep, pretty much. 😉

  • These pictures are fantastic! Joey is too cute.

    • Thank you! He’s my sweet little buddy, even if he isn’t a great farm dog 🙂

  • So hilarious! Look at them all staring at him – too funny!

    • I know- I still can’t get over what curious creatures cows are!

  • Jessica Shannon

    awww that is so cute!!

  • Ashley Loeffelholz

Oh, my, word! Joey to too cute!! I “awwwwwwed” at every picture.

  • lmao… omg… this is so cute/hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhh!!!!!!

    • I was in stitches the ENTIRE time. They were so curious about him and poor Joey wanted no part of it.

  • Brit

Oh my gosh this is too funny! He is the cutest.

Also, totally random but I went from working in DC to working in WV this last year and on my drive to work everyday I was so excited because I’d never seen so many cows. Everyone at my work thought I was crazy, but I still get happy when I see cows 🙂

    • I was the same way when I moved out here! Seeing cows everywhere still makes me happy, especially in the spring when there are little babies everywhere 🙂

  • Joey is seriously my favorite Farm/Blog dog.

  • this is so freaking adorable. has he gotten any braver yet?? i kind of hope not, because he’s so cute as is.

    • Nope, not even a little bit! He actually refuses to go into the pasture lately, he hides under the truck until we are ready to leave. Silly little wuss.

  • hahahha i love the one of them all trying to sniff him and he’s like eeek go away!

    • That’s my favorite too! They were SO curious about him.

  • I LOVE COWS. Like, dogs make me happy, but the amount I love cows is ridiculous. I’ve told Jason I want one (a dairy) as a pet one day. That gets me lots of eye rolls, but I’m serious, I WANT A COW.

    • I had no idea how fun cows were until I moved out here. I was stunned by how curious they are! And ohmygosh the little babies with their little noses and their sweet little faces and their curly little heads! I agree, you should have a cow.

aUnS – Recently i would be low on cash and debts were eating me from all sides. That was UNTIL I learned to make money.. on the INTERNET. I went to surveymoneymaker p net, and started filling in surveys for money, and doing so, i have been really more able to do my things! i’m happy i did this.. – 1HcP

  • OMG that is adorable! From this post, the farm looks fun – walking amongst the cows in a quiet landscape. I’m sure there are days when it’s not, and I know it’s hard work, but the pictures are gorgeous! Happy SITS Day 🙂

  • Emma Craig

Lol! Yeah, he may need a bit of work before he’s a champion cattle-herder! I would love to see my chihuahua, who is afraid on shadows (really!) meet up with a cow. She’s probably climb me until she was safe on my shoulder!

  • Seana Turner

That is so cute… my dog would be exactly the same way. She once crawled under a fence to chase the cows, thinking they would react the way the deer at home do. But no such luck. Then she got frightened and couldn’t get back under the fence to us. What an adventure!

  • Awww…. But I do understand Joey being just a little bit afraid of something 50 times his size. 🙂

  • Aww, hilarious! Cows are so weird. Visiting from SITS today!

  • Tiffany Mrsh Haywood

This is too cute! Poor Joey! This must be such an amazing journey for you! Happy SITS Day!

  • Martha

OH MY GOSH HE’S SO CUUUUTTTTEEEEE!!!!! Sorry but Joey just gets a major “squee!” from this corner!!! I want a corgi so bad but we can’t have a dog in our apartment. I just love the look on his face in that second pic–like, What the heck are you and why are you sniffing me?!?!

    Happy SITS day btw!!

  • Adorable puppy!! Nothing sweeter than fur babies!:)

  • Beth Rosen

LOL too funny! I wonder what my dog would do if she got near a cow. Probably try to get them to play 🙂 #SITSblogging

  • Hahaha! That’s hilarious! And so cute! I enjoyed reading your blog! Happy SITS Day!

  • Extraordinary Kids

That pup’s adorable! Happy SITS day!

  • Jennifer Ludwigsen

    That’s hilarious – what a nut!

  • Savvy WorkingGal

Cute story. Growing up on the farm we always had dogs, but in addition to chasing cows they also liked to chase cars. We had to keep them kenneled because on the farm dogs were not allowed in the house.

  • That’s hilarious! I wish we could have livestock. Happy SITS day, late!

  • Lisa Green

So CUTE! You’re puppy is adorable. I’m not ashamed to admit it was a happy day (secretly) for me when all the cattle on our farm were sold. I never could get used to all that moo-ing while I was trying to sleep!
